What is powder coating.


Powder coating, just like paint, is a surface treatment to provide products with a protective layer.
In contrast to paint, this layer is applied in a dry powder form with the aid of static charge.


The static charge is used to attract the positively charged powder to the negatively charged material.

The same principle when you rub your hair with a balloon, they are also attracted to each other.

As a result, the powder adheres statically to the part and all powder is also applied to the material to be treated.
This ensures that the powder adheres and that waste is prevented, which results in a high yield.

In powder form, the powder only attaches statically to the material and you can simply blow off with compressed air or wipe with a cloth.

In order for the powder to be a final protective layer, it must be heated, also called curing or baking.
This is done by heating the applied powder to the bake-off temperature and duration associated with the powder.
This baking time and temperature has been determined by the manufacturer and can differ per powder.

The powder comes in many types and types, so the desired end result and the material and application to be treated ultimately determines which powder you need.

Why powder coating?
Powder coating has a number of advantages compared to wet coating.

Free from chemical solvents
Basically finished in 1 layer.
Finishing mistakes such as dripping and sagging that occurs with wet painting is excluded.
The thickness of the coating layer is the same everywhere.
The finish is much more resistant to bumps and scratches and chemical products.
The treatment is simpler than with wet painting.

Less pollution of the workplace.
Due to the lack of solvents, the environment and safety provisions are considerably less. This saves you a lot of expenses for insurance premiums and auditing authorities.
The viscosity of the top coat is always good because no liquid carrier is used.

Static charging works as follows:
The powder is blown through a special syringe with compressed air. in the syringe the powder is statically positively charged by means of the Corona or Tribo principle.

Grounding the workpiece to the powder coating system creates a negative charge on the part to be treated and creates the electrostatic effect between the powder and part.
The positive charge is attracted to the negative side and the powder adheres to the workpiece.

Method of Giving Positive Charge to Powder.
The way in which the positive charge is given to the powder can differ.
There are 2 principles with both their advantages and disadvantages,
